A lighthouse no one sees

By car, the lighthouse is not easy to find. From Archer Avenue and 107th Street, head west onto Grant Road. Continue through the junkyard that seems to take up Lemont's northern half, go underneath a concrete viaduct and then past a ship's propeller that's painted green and sticking out of the ground like a giant flower.

A few more hundred feet west, the road dead-ends at a metal gate topped by barbed wire. There's a little hut for a security guard, next to an intercom speaker planted on the side of the road.

Although the lighthouse is just on the other side of a bank of trees, you're never going to see it.

That's because the lighthouse, even though it's on public property, is off limits to you and me.

Dick Lanyon, the MWRD's executive director, said an edict from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - as part of the war on terror after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 - ordered the lighthouse and the surrounding area closed in 2004.

"They didn't want any shipping facility to become a target," Lanyon said.
