According to the Labor Department, workplace suicides have risen to 251 incidents last year, which is the highest statistics reported since the group started tracking these situations in 1992. While it’s clear these difficult economic times can lead to more suicides for people without well established support groups of family, friends or co-workers there are things companies can do to help protect their employees.

Video security systems can help employers notice many things about their employees. First, they can easily be paired with other security products to ensure employees are unable to bring weapons into the building. While it’s clear suicide can occur without a weapon (overdose or other dangers persist), video security can ensure workplace suicide won’t occur with a gun or other deadly weapon.

Employers might be able to see changes in a behavior pattern of employees with a video security system and be able to intervene before suicide is presented as an option for a depressed employee. Employees who withdraw, verbally attack others or are aggressive and reckless should be monitored very closely.

In addition to assisting with trying to prevent workplace suicide, video security can be an effective way to protect the other employees who work with depressed co-workers. Sometimes before an employee will commit suicide they open fire on their co-workers with their weapon. Thus, video security can help protect the other areas of the building and alarm other workers of any workplace violence occurring in the area so they can get to safety without being harmed by the depressed co-worker.

Capability of security cameras vastly improved

John Knox sits before his laptop in the office of his company, Knox Integrated Systems, on Watt Road. Easing his finger across the cursor pad, he views cars parked on his lot called in from a swivelling security camera the size of a shoe box on the side of his building.

With a click or two of a key he zooms in on one car. With a few more clicks, the car's license plate appears. The numbers are easily readable. From the same camera he can read the advertising off the sides of 18-wheelers parked at a lot a quarter of a mile away.

Camera technology grows almost daily in every aspect.

In less than a decade what appears on the surveillance camera screen has gone from fuzzy, stop-and-start, black-and-white images to full-color, sharp-as-a-tack quality.

Jayne Burritt of the Knoxville Public Building Authority says that when a visitor complains of tripping over a rumply rug in a city building, the spot can be called up on a surveillance camera in an image so sharp that it can be easily determined whether the rug has any creases.
