What “The Butt Bomb” Means For Our Security And The War On Terror ...

You can say what you want about al Qaeda and the other Islamic terrorists.  They’re nothing if not tenacious in their pursuit of new and innovative ways to murder in the name of their holy war.  Their most recent innovation?  The “butt bomb,” which is really no laughing matter.  Such a bomb was recently implanted in the colon of a terrorist who then deliberately turned himself over to authorities so that the bomb inside him could be detonated (via cell phone) while he was being questioned by a Saudi prince the terrorists wanted to knock off.

Here’s a BBC report (via Hot Air ) on the bombing and what it means for our security measures:

At Hot Air, Ed Morrissey ponders what this will mean for our security measures.  This bomb made it through no small number of security screenings and was successfully detonated even if by chance it missed its intended target.

While I shudder to think of the indignities the TSA will subject us to in order to screen for this new threat, I also think this gristly new innovation has a lesson in it for our foreign policy in general.

No matter what we do, no matter how tight we make our security, the terrorists are eventually going to be able to sneak an attack through.  Either by dumb luck, or through some new innovation we aren’t prepared for, they’ll do it.  And so rather than pretending as though we can just pull back to within our borders and defend ourselves here, we need to realize that we have an interest in having a presence in other parts of the world.  Because no matter what we do, some groups of people are going to hate us.  No matter what we do, some groups of people just want to watch the world burn.  Rather than thinking we can hide out from those people in “fortress America” we need to be out in the world and engaging them.

And I’m not necessarily saying “fight them there so we don’t have to fight them here,” though that’s a part of it.  I’m saying that we need to be involved in promoting freedom and representative government all around the world.  Which is, essentially, the Bush doctrine.  “We support the aspirations of all free people.”  And not just with our military, but economically as well.  Free trade.  Easy immigration.  And zero tolerance for tyrants.
