Personally, I love devices that detect motion outside when I am home; I have motion sensitve outside lights and a wireless infrared beam that creates a chime inside the house when it is crossed. You can mount one of these above your front door to cover the steps/deck or you can make an invisible beam cut across at your entrance(s).

I also have an outdoor wireless internet motion sensitive camera that records activity and can be set to send me a message if it detects movement. I can also see the house remotely using my browser. None of these gadgets require monthly fees.

You need to try to prevent the intruder getting into your property in the first place and external security lighting with PIR sensors are an inexpensive solution. If you go for a burglar alarm system always buy the best one you can afford. To save installation costs go for a wireless system as this can be installed by a keen DIY’er.
