East Liverpool residents need to be aware that con artists are currently working the neighborhoods. An APX home security representative knocked on my door Thursday evening and immediately began asking for personal information and details about the security of my home, all the while insisting that I live in a high crime area that he claimed is getting worse.
Before I knew it, he was filling out a purchase order in my name that included thousands of dollars worth of “free” home-security equipment.
I became suspicious quickly and decided to listen to his pitch, but once I started asking questions about him and his company, he got a bit testy. His answers to my questions were evasive and made little sense. When I kept refusing to give him personal information for the purchase agreement form, he became defensive and belligerent.
Thats funny because the other day, i was offered a "free gift" just for listening to a salesman selling Kirby sweepers. When I told him I was not interested in the sweeper he asked if he could give my free gift to my neighbor. BTW, the free gift was a can of Glade. I told him he obviously needed it more than me and gave it back to him.

If you read the "READ THIS FIRST" section above the comment window, you will see that I don't post anonymous comments. Actually, I do post some anonymous comments if they have merit, but to do so I have to cut and paste the comments in another comment window, make up a screen name, and repost it myself. I don't always have time (or wish to take the time) to do that. I too was visited by one of APX's representatives on Friday and had a similar experience. Before I new it he was filling out an order form. I told him I wasn't signing anything until I had a day to research them and he basically told me it was sign now or he sells it to someone else. I will admit he was polite during the whole process, but when I wouldn't sign he too packed up and left. He wasn't lying either, a few hours later I noticed an APX sign in my neighbor's yard at the end of the street....15.07.10
An alarm company from Utah has made a name for itself on Vancouver Island. The problem is the company has picked up a reputation most businesses try to avoid.
Police have come forward to warn the public after receiving a number of reports about problematic salesmen from APX Alarm canvassing neighbourhoods across the Island since May.
Saanich police received 12 calls in one day about tactics used by APX Alarms’ door-to-door salesmen.
“These complaints have been as minor as (canvassers) being extremely persistent … to as concerning as (a salesman) entering a house and not leaving when asked to do so,” Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.
The company has a business licence to work door-to-door in Saanich, issued June 25.
The Better Business Bureau knows about the company, having received numerous complaints.
“We did had one lady complain that they came -- a young man, charming -- came in the evening on Saturday. She’s 81 years old, and this man was very charming and persuasive, and when she agreed to purchase the alarm, immediately four people showed up and uninstalled her old one, and they were there until midnight,” said Rosalind Scott, executive director of the Vancouver Island BBB. “We’re seeing a number of red flags here … And that is something that needs to be looked at, and people need to be warned about.”
