Fidepro intelligent smoke alarm is the only of it’s kind. It uses the existing mains wiring of the house, so there’s no need to put any more wires in fitting it. I have this system in my house. It took 3 hours work from an electrician to put 4 units. My insurance company gave great discount for having Fidepro- I’ll get the system free of charge within 6 years. I think every house should have the same protection.

Lightning-detection system needs adjustment

DECATUR - For four years now, the Decatur Park District has used a Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System to help organizers know if golfers, softball and soccer players are in danger of being hit by a light-ning strike.

The system, installed at Hickory Point, Scovill and Red Tail Run golf courses, at the Rotary Park ball fields and at the Park District's soccer complex adjacent to Stephen Decatur Middle School, detects electri-cal activity in the area and sounds an alarm. Once the activity has safely ceased, another alarm sounds as an "all clear."

In theory, the system is a good idea. No one wants to see a recreational athlete killed due to a lightning strike. And more and more insurance carriers are requiring groups like the park district to have a safety system in place.

But in practice, the Thor Guard system has mostly ticked off golfers and created headaches for golf pros who have to deal with frustrated customers.

Case in point was last week at the first round of the Decatur Men's City Amateur Golf Championship at Scovill. The system sounded late in the round and, according to rules, golfers were required to stop play immediately, mark their balls and head into the pro shop.
