Yes, I have an aunt who died of breast cancer. But as I told my oncologist, I come from a big Irish family on my father's side. You name it, I have a relative who died of it. She reviewed the limited information I gave her and said my risk seemed to be so low that my health insurance probably wouldn't even cover genetic testing . (That can run several thousand dollars.)
I was content with that answer, but there were other women to consider: my daughter, my sisters, my niece. In the wake of my diagnosis, it kind of felt as if I "gave" them an increased risk of cancer.
For another thing that sucks about breast cancer is that your very illness increases the appearance of risk for your loved ones. Now, every time a doctor asks one of them if there is any breast cancer in her close relatives, she'll have to say yes.
Why, a friend who's an 11-year breast-cancer survivor told me her 80-something mother is given extra scrutiny at the doctor's because of her -- the daughter's -- cancer. Kinda makes the cancer patient feel vaguely contagious.
